Skin has its own moisture system, known as the natural moisturising factor (NMF). A large part of it is made up of free amino acids and compounds derived from them. They bind water in the outer layer and help keep skin soft and flexible.
Each amino acid has its own character. Glycine and proline are among the most common amino acids in collagen. Arginine and serine are good at holding moisture. Histidine has antioxidant properties and may help calm the skin. Lysine and leucine are part of the proteins that give skin its structure.
Applied in skincare, amino acids work mainly in the outer layers, supporting hydration and comfort. Formulas often use a blend, for example from rice or fermentation, because the different amino acids complement each other.
How to use: Amino acids are gentle and suit most skin types, sensitive skin included. Use them morning and evening alongside other actives.
Good to know: Amino acids are also what peptides are made of. If you see a short chain of amino acids in the ingredient list, you will find it under peptides.
