Bakuchiol is not a retinoid and its chemical structure is quite different from retinol. Even so, it appears to influence the skin in several of the same ways. The research is still more limited than for retinol, but the results so far are promising.
It is used to soften the look of fine lines, even out skin tone and leave skin smoother and firmer. It also has antioxidant properties.
Many people choose bakuchiol because it feels gentler than retinol. Dryness, flaking and redness are less common, and it does not make skin more sun-sensitive in the way retinol can.
How to use: Bakuchiol can be used morning and evening and suits sensitive skin or anyone who finds retinol hard to tolerate. It can also be paired with retinol for a gentler routine.
Good to know: Wear sun protection during the day as part of a good routine. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, there is little research on bakuchiol, so talk to your doctor before you start.
