Enzymes

Gentle exfoliation from fruit

Fruit enzymes such as papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple break down the proteins that hold dead skin cells to the surface. The result is gentle exfoliation and smoother, fresher skin.

Enzymes are proteins that start and speed up specific processes. Those used for exfoliation are called proteases. They loosen the bonds between dead cells so they can lift away from the surface more easily.

The effect is similar to acids but gentler and limited to the surface. That makes enzyme exfoliation a good option for sensitive or dry skin, or if acids feel too strong. Skin texture becomes more even and skin is better prepared for serum and moisturiser.

Enzymes are often found in masks and powder cleansers that activate with water. Because they are sensitive to heat and moisture, they are often packed as a powder or in formulas designed to keep them stable.

How to use: Use an enzyme mask or cleanser one to three times a week. Apply to clean skin, leave on for the recommended time and rinse with lukewarm water.

Good to know: Even though enzymes are gentle, skin can be a little more sensitive afterwards. Wear sun protection during the day and avoid strong acids on the same day.
