Probiotics

Ferments and lysates for the microbiome

Skin has its own microbiome, a community of good bacteria that helps keep it balanced. Probiotic skincare ingredients are usually ferments or lysates of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus, and help support this environment.

A balanced microbiome goes hand in hand with a strong skin barrier. When the balance is upset, for example by harsh cleansing, stress, changes in climate or over-exfoliation, skin can become dry, unsettled and more reactive.

Skincare rarely uses live bacteria, as they are hard to keep stable in a product. Instead it uses ferments, filtrates and lysates, made from the bacteria or their components. These can help strengthen the barrier, calm the skin and create good conditions for its own bacteria.

In ingredient lists, probiotic ingredients often appear as Lactobacillus or as a ferment, such as fermented tea or a fermented root vegetable. Some ferments are also used because they help keep the product fresh.

How to use: Probiotic ingredients are gentle and can be used morning and evening. They are especially suited to sensitive, dry and unsettled skin.

Good to know: You can also support your microbiome by using a mild cleanser and avoiding washing or exfoliating too often.
