Ferulic acid

Plant-based antioxidant

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant found in the cell walls of plants such as rice, oats and wheat. It helps skin defend itself against free radicals from UV light and pollution, and stabilises other antioxidants.

Sun exposure creates free radicals that can contribute to early signs of ageing, such as fine lines, uneven tone and dark spots. Ferulic acid helps neutralise them and so supports the skin's own defences.

It is best known for its partnership with vitamins C and E. It can make vitamin C more stable and strengthen the combined antioxidant effect, which is why the three often share a serum.

Ferulic acid is not a UV filter and does not replace sunscreen. It is an addition that supports skin as it deals with sun and environmental stress.

How to use: Ferulic acid is most useful in the morning, under your sunscreen. It is usually well tolerated and suits most skin types.

Good to know: In ingredient lists it appears as Ferulic Acid. Oryzanol from rice bran oil is a natural compound of ferulic acid and plant sterols.
